Takatori Wakanari

  • Taisho period, 1915
  • color on silk
  • set of four hanging scrolls

Paintings – Japanese / Asian Paintings

Takatori often painted exquisite subjects that might be considered as too witty, but he was trying to seek for the possibility of innovation in modern Yamatoe painting. This work is the Four Seasons painting following the contents of critical writings about the writing style of four literary men of the Heian period. It was discussed as "the most elaborate plan in the site" at the Monbusho Bijutsu Tenrankai. (「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
