Crafts – Ceramics

This was a gift from Emperor Showa to Empress Kōjun on the occasion of the enthronement ceremony in 1928. A grass and flower pattern is painted by Kawai’s unique brushwork on the hemisphere shaped lid covered with irregular black glaze. Utilizing his knowledge about Chinese and Korean ancient ceramics, and scientific research of glaze, this piece is finished into a decorous form by Kawai’s unique sensitivity.(「Reviewing Modern Ceramics」2021)
