Zhou Danshi known as the artist of this scroll is considered to be a occupational painter who came from China with a priest Shunjo of the Sennyuji Temple, and is mentioned in the collection of essays on art, Kuntaikansochoki. Although it is a pair at the present, these were originally two of sixteen or eighteen arhats paintings, and stout bodies show the style of Taoist and Buddhist portraits of the Yuan Dynasty.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.1」2003)
