Earthly Paradise and Sacred Mountains

Earthly Paradise and Sacred Mountains

The scenery of two legendary Utopias in China are depicted and arranged in this pair of scrolls. Tomioka, who had deep respect for the Imperial Household, was told that these were to be offered to the Imperial Household when it was ordered by the Kyoto City. Perhaps because of nervousness, his unique free and unrestrained lines cannot be seen in these pictures. However, this painting features delicate and minute composition, dignified shapes and careful arrangement of colors. As a result, the painter achieved a strong classical formative sense that excelled all of his other works.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
