Cabinet with design of Mt. Penglai, clouds and cranes in makie

On the occasion of his investiture in 1916, Crown Prince Hirohito (later Emperor Showa) gifted this cabinet to his father Emperor Taisho. Its shape, decorative motifs, and production techniques are based on works from the imperial treasures in the Shosoin Repository. Beginning in 1896, the artist Rokkaku Shisui (1867–1950) had the unique opportunity to travel across Japan for seven years as part of a team conducting a survey of the nation’s cultural heritage.
