Paintings – Oil Paintings

This was copied from the work owned by the Versailles Palace Museum in France by the order of the Imperial Household Ministry while Matsuoka was in Europe. The original is ‛Battle of Isri on August 14th, 1844' by Horace Vernet, a 19th century French painter of academicism. Matsuoka copied about one out of forty-four parts of the painting. Attempting to reproduce the original in extremely accurate detail, it is a precious example of his results gained during studying abroad.(「New Edition Grace, Beauty and Inqenuity-Masterpices of the Museum of Imperial Collections, Sannomaru Shozokan Vol.2」2003)
